Volunteers

Volunteers are the heart of Henderson House. As we continue to grow and expand services throughout the county, the need for dedicated volunteers grows as well. Volunteers play an important role in serving the needs of the victims.

Call 503-472-0244 or email director@hendersonhouse.org for more information.

We need volunteers to answer phones, be available to clients, provide transportation to appointments, and do outreach. Volunteers to help with office clerical, housekeeping, yard work and minor maintenance is also needed to help keep Henderson House running. We cannot possibly do all that is needed alone.

Volunteers will receive 30 hours of training by professionals and guest speakers in the field. Trainings are scheduled for the spring and the fall. Henderson House provides a 24-hour crisis line and safe shelter, medical, legal, and personal advocacy, information and referrals, emotional support and information during legal proceedings and emergency medical visits. For more information or to sign up for training contact Rhonda Fabreth, Executive Director at 472-0244 or toll-free 877-227-5946.

This is a great opportunity for retired persons, homemakers, professionals, and others to help "Make a Difference"!

The following are direct service volunteer opportunities:

Crisis Help Line: Shifts are available Monday evenings through Friday mornings. Volunteers take the agency's crisis cell phone overnight. You can volunteer for one night or more.

Morning Greeters: Spend a few hours in the morning helping new shelter clients adjust, conduct house meetings to address resident concerns and resolve issues, and remind residents of their shelter responsibilities. Lend a caring ear when they just need to talk. Help us meet their personal physical needs (food, clothing, toiletries, etc.) and insure their wellbeing.

Evening Greeters: Just as with morning greeters, spend a few hours in the evening, helping residents settle in for the evening, orient any new clients, and lend a caring ear when they just need to talk. Remind residents of their shelter responsibilities and house rules as necessary.

Transporters: Many of our clients do not have their own transportation and public transportation is difficult and often unrealistic. We need a pool of people available on short notice to provide clients with transportation to and from the shelter for medical appointments, school for children, apartment searches, employment applications, and similar needs.

Children's Program: Spend time with children in play and educational activities. Volunteers can help assist the Family Resources Advocate with conducting children's intakes and help co-facilitate parent groups.

Support Group: You can receive training to become a peer support group facilitator or assist with an existing group. Choose between working with adults or working with children.

Outreach Program: We would like to continue and expand our drop-in services, but we can't do this without your help. We need volunteers in outreach offices throughout the county to provide information, referrals, support, and advocacy to women and children in the community. We need volunteers who can dedicate a certain amount of time each week for the same location.

Community Education: Grade School: We need volunteers to help conduct a specially designed violence prevention program in local grade schools. You would work closely with the Family Resources Advocate to provide this much-needed service throughout Yamhill County. The more volunteers we have the more children we can reach with this important message. Middle and High School: We need volunteers to help middle and high school students receive information about domestic violence, sexual assault, and dating violence issues. College Students: Help new students learn about dating violence issues and sexual assault risk reduction. Businesses, service clubs, and other organizations: Help teach people about the signs of an abuser and the techniques used to control the victim, how survivors cope, how abusers keep victims from leaving, and how businesses can support victims.

In addition to volunteering directly with survivors of family violence, volunteers are also critical in helping the agency in many other ways:

Administrative: Volunteers are needed to provide clerical assistance, data input and computer work in the office. We need help in the publication and distribution of mailings, flyers, brochures, and educational materials.

Facilities: We need volunteers to assist with house and office maintenance, maintaining inventory and supply lists, and food shopping.

Donations: We need volunteers to help arrange for the pick up, organization, and distributions of donated food, goods, and other items.

Yard work and special projects: Volunteers are needed to help maintain our facilities beyond what is provided by the landscaping services. May include hedge and bush trimming, cleaning up beneath and around fruit trees, and more. Special projects may include painting, planting, and cleaning.

Fundraising: Volunteers can help stuff appeal letters, prepare newsletters for mailing, and help plan and conduct special events. Henderson House is involved with three major fundraisers each year and volunteers are always welcome. We are always looking for people with special writing abilities to help with news articles, grant writing, and special projects.

Board of Directors: Board members set overall policy for the organization, oversee finances, lead fundraising efforts, and help promote the organization. Opportunities are also available to serve on one or two of the board committees without a full commitment to serve on the board.

Or, volunteer with our Foundation!
