Crisis Line Response Advocate

Volunteer Crisis Line Response Advocates assist in carrying out the mission of Henderson House by providing high quality support, information and referrals to survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault.

Responsibilities:

  • Following agency policies
  • Assuring immediate and continued safety and confidentiality of all callers and shelter clients
  • Attend relevant meetings related to the agency
  • Answer the Henderson House Crisis Phone Line in a compassionate and professional manner
  • Provide an average of five services to each caller:
    • Assess caller needs
    • Provide trauma-informed advocacy support
    • Crisis intervention as needed
    • Offer information and appropriate referrals to community services using warm handoffs when possible
    • Assist with safety planning and brainstorming available options
  • Accurately obtain and record survivor demographic information for use in identifying service and geographic needs of callers
  • Help with special projects as requested

Qualifications:    

  • Must complete the 40-hour Core Advocacy Training
  • Must complete Henderson House Crisis Line Response Training
  • Philosophy compatible to Henderson House Mission Statement, especially to include:
    • Understanding the experience of domestic and sexual violence survivors
    • Understanding of oppression and how it supports interpersonal violence
    • Understanding of the impact of trauma on survivors of violence
  • Availability to commit to volunteering up to one weekend per month or 3 single weekday shifts for minimum of 6 months
    • Weekday Shifts – Monday through Thursday –  5pm-9am
    • Weekend Shift – Friday 5pm – Monday 9am
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of Henderson House clients
  • Basic understanding of technology (ie navigating the internet, use of email, and cell phones)
  • While English/Spanish bilingual skills are a plus, they are not necessary to be considered
  • Ability to work well with a variety of people from diverse backgrounds
  • Ability to work with Henderson House staff as a team member

This position reports to: Henderson House Volunteer Coordinator and Staff Advocates

Time commitment:  Minimum 6 Months – 3 weekday shifts or 1 weekend per month
